Life’s too short to drink instant coffee

5 highlights of 2023

It’s been a full year but strangely I’ve had difficulty teasing out five particular highlights. However I do have a list even though number five is perhaps a bit of a cop-out.

Three good holidays with eight excellent hotels. First my trip to Jordan, then Juni and I had a wet but nonetheless excellent week in Piemonte (see photo left) and finally we enjoyed a hot and 100% sunny trip to Rhodes where we revisited memories of the late 80s.

All three holidays were with Voyages Jules Verne and it consistently delivers. I guess it’s a little pricier than other tour companies but I’m willing to pay the extra for good hotels, knowledgeable guides and efficient organisations.

The above highlight about hotels notwithstanding it’s got to be my trip to Jordan. It was a bit of a bucket list trip to see Petra but it was that and much more besides. There was a good tour group, we had excellent weather and the guide did all that you’d want. Plus the local agent looked after me when I thought I had a medical emergency. And we got to see the splendid Roman ruins at Jerash (pictured left) as a bonus.

I continued to work for Sensotec and got a little more work besides. Michael Williamson asked for some help regarding a company he part owns and then Duncan Potter woke up to the need to do a little hard work at Gransden. The two together are supplementing my Sensotec income nicely. And the Michael Williamson option has resulted in a very effective working partnership with Chris Sidell.

I feel that my photography has moved on. Evidence is my photo across the lake at Arosa taken last year was featured on Digital Photography and my membership of Cambridge Camera Club since the summer where my photo entries into its competitions haven’t been universally rubbished. My photos of the Great Gallery at the Palace of Venaria (left) on our Piemonte trip and ‘wet and windy in Wales’ both scored well.

Italy. As noted above enjoyed another week in Italy. We had excellent hotels and enjoyed first class company. Although the weather wasn’t perfect, some sun but also plenty of rain, Italy still delivered what it does best: great food (as in the photo on the left), from simple to more sophisticated, with super intelligent and engaging service.
