Last Saturday night was an occasion for lots of people who knew each other 40 years ago to see whether or not they could still recognise each other. With less hair and a little more around the waist it was not so easy but surprisingly voices seemed easier.
I was at Churchill from 1966 (world cup year), did a BA in Natural Sciences specialising in chemistry and later theoretical chemistry. Friends suggested that I was a failed mathematician. I did one year of a PhD before deciding that it was not for me and left to earn money around the world.
Saturday night was excellent. Fine food, good wines (lots) and lots to talk about. Coincidentally I sat next to John Hazeldine, cross country runner, blue and geologist, to find that he lives within a couple of miles.
Juilan Filochowski, JCR President in 1968 and I (I was Social Sec) also enjoyed taking to JCR President Harry Bullivant and Equipment and Societies Officer (!) Cali Taylor about the rules and life in the 1960s. No women, late passes if you were out after 12pm, the great urine sample prank, parties in the sick bay and wars with the Domestic Bursar about just about everything.
