Life’s too short to drink instant coffee

  • Damn! I love Indonesia

We were invited to a wedding, Sat 12 Dec 15. It was Juni’s cousin’s son whom we knew quite well so we had a mind to go. Problem was it was in Surabaya, East Java. Rather a long way to go just for a family event. So we decided to make a holiday of it.

  • Big trip to Oz: March 2015

Last month we were in Australia. It wasn’t a big trip by some people’s standards but it was 3 weeks, we haven’t had a 3 week holiday for ages, and it was Australia which is a long way away. We went to see number 1 son who’s a police officer in Fremantle.

  • Plymouth? Ho! 28-30 May 14

Wednesday, 28 May 14: the problem with the weather at the moment is that it’s great for growing: plenty of rain, enough warmth and long hours of daylight so everywhere’s green and today’s typical. It’s been raining overnight and it’s an overcast sky but I’m sat in First Class on the 0745 Cambridge to King’s Cross.

  • Bath time: 12-14 Aug 13

Monday 12 Aug 13: Lots of what the government does puzzles me and it was the same for those which have gone before. And what it does with the railways puzzles as much as any but it’s a result of new rail franchises that I was able to travel in style to Bath without breaking…

  • Regadera, Cordoba, Spain; 8 May 13

There’s a limit to the number of patios in Cordoba which you’d want to visit. And there’s more than enough to exceed it. But fortunately there’s also the Mezquite and the Alcazar.

  • Long day’s journey into night; Jamie’s Italian at Gatwick Airport

It was one of those days which I keep meaning not to repeat: an early start, a full day’s work, an evening flight and a late night arrival in another country.

  • Indonesia kembali; 31 Aug/1 Sep 12

I’ve had a long relationship with Indonesia. I lived there for a couple of years in the 70s, I’ve got a continuing marital connection and I gave my cameras, cash and credit cards to an unnamed Balinese a few years ago (click here to read about that!).

  • Sao Paulo revisited: 13-16 Aug 12

Imagine … you’ve got an international flight from the main airport of the biggest city in one of the world’s leading economies. You’ve been told to go early because there’s some sort of industrial action which will slow your progress through security and immigration. You get to the airport and the desks are not yet…

  • Tokyo revisted; 13-15 Jun 12

I first went to Tokyo some 40 years ago. I worked in the oil and gas business and wrote computer programs which ran on big fat mainframes and were used to support contract negotiations between my employer at the time, Shell, and its Japanese utility company customers. This meant that I enjoyed 2 extended stays…

  • Shanghai nights (2; and 1 in Guangzhou)

Sometimes it’s best to turn left. In fact it’s advice that the current UK government could well heed. I wouldn’t expect the dominant Tories to think that way of course but their Lib Dem coalition partners could well behave a little more left like. Not left like the labour party mind but a little more…
