5 highlights of 2023
—
It’s been a full year but strangely I’ve had difficulty teasing out five particular highlights. However I do have a list even though number five is perhaps a bit of a cop-out. Three good holidays with eight excellent hotels. First my trip to Jordan, then Juni and I had a wet but nonetheless excellent week…

Life’s too short to drink instant coffee
It’s not quite the same but I spotted this sign in Arequipa when I visited Peru in 2013. I liked the sign and it was one of the positives that day because it began with a bad case of the Big D during the night.

Rhodes revisited
We first went to Rhodes in 1988 when Clare and Charles were seven and five respectively. We booked a two week holiday in a beach hotel with half board and I remember dinners were served school dinners style on long tables. We rented a car, that didn’t seem to break the bank in those days,…

Remember when flying was fun?
You didn’t do it often of course but when you did you might actually enjoy it. And when you were off on holiday that first drink once you were airborne somehow signalled the start of your vacation proper.

Peaks, ports and palazzi: 5 highlights
—
We’ve just come back from a little over a week in north west Italy: Turin and Piemonte, and Genova and its coastline to the east. It’s been a busy year on TripAdvisor
—
I don’t really know why I bother but I’m pretty diligent in reporting restaurants I’ve visited and hotels I’ve stayed at on TripAdvisor. In 2022 I rated 9 hotels and 36 restaurants. For some reason I did not rate our replacement hotel, The Gran Hotel le Pace in Sant’Angelo, which wasn’t really that bad but…

Elan Valley photo weekend
Earlier this month I enjoyed a weekend in mid Wales mainly as a part of a photo weekend with Alan Mershon of Going Digital. It was to start at 1000 on the Friday morning and given that I had a three or four hour drive to get there I set off the night before and…

Brighton: 5 takeaways
I’ve just spent a couple of nights in Brighton. I must say I’m underwhelmed but then maybe what it offers is not what I look for. Anyway these are my five takeaways (four positive and one negative to make up the numbers).
