Life’s too short to drink instant coffee

  • hotpot, Cambridge; 22 Jun 10

Yesterday was the wife’s birthday. It’s not really fair coming straight after our wedding anniversary but at least I got Father’s day in between (I just checked by the way and it is father’s and not fathers’ so it is specially for me!).  Anyway I did get most things right, present, card and flowers, and…

  • 3 Indians; 11-18 Jun 10

There was a time when all Indian restaurants were the same. There was one in every town and most villages and they served the same formulaic fare: lamb, beef, chicken or fish with each of maybe 6 or 8 different curries. There was an element of the restaurant equivalent of  ‘pile it high sell it…

  • Edinburgh Odyssey; 2-5 Jun 10

Wednesday 2 Jun 10: the cat arrived at 0815. Not the one which teases my dog by staring through the patio doors but the Cambridge taxi service which takes me to the station. The driver was keen to talk which we did. We started with David Laws and finished on electoral reform. He was a…

  • Graffiti at the Hotel Felix; 29 May 10

The wife says that I’m too critical about people asking meaningless redundant questions. One that really annoys me is the one whereby a waiter interrupts your meal and asks ‘is everything OK?’. My standard response is, unless I’m on my best behaviour, ‘that’s a useless question because it won’t give you any useful data in return’.…

  • Quy Mill Hotel; 15 May 10

It’s that time of the year again. Spring, a little late this year, the end of the football season, but thanks to the world cup it’ll go on through the summer, and an election, mercifully this one was interesting. It’s also the time when the newspapers offer us special dining deals as an incentive to…

  • Dog and Duck, Linton; 20 Mar 10

Maybe is should be the ‘Cane ed Anatra’ because the Dog and Duck in Linton runs an Italian restaurant. And it does it without abandoning its roots either because it’s still  a local pub with all the attendant features: real ale, lots of locals and smokers in the garden!

  • Pheasant 1 Anthurium 0; 31 Dec 09

Two of the restaurants that I’ve enjoyed recently have had contrasting fortunes. In Keyston the Pheasant was entered for the ‘best local British’ restaurant competition on Gordon Ramsey’s F word on channel 4. Click here for more info. It won! At the other extreme the Anthurium in Harston is  no more. It’s closed.

  • St John’s Chop House; 4 Dec 09

It was a bit of a squeeze to get in because the St John’s Chop House, in common with most other restaurants this month, is heavily booked for Christmas parties. However get in we did and we had a fine table upstairs close to our own ‘private’ bar!

  • Cafe Cienfuegos, Cuba; 14 Nov 09

Nobody goes to Cuba for the food. In restaurants the choice is generally chicken, fish or meat and the meat is usually pork. You get some salad (good) and some vegetables cooked English ie over-cooked (bad). And for dessert it always seems to be flan. But the Cafe Cienfuegos is different.

  • LGA conference Harrogate; 30 Jun to 2 Jul 09

It was 12 months ago that I started this blog. It was meant to complement my political web-site which thanks to the kind electorate of Cottenham, Histon and Impington is required to continue. And thanks to my fellow Lib Dem councillors on Cambridgeshire County Council I am starting my 3rd year as group leader and…
