I had a Simon Cowell experience this week. I was flattered into joining the judging panel for Impington Village College’s annual ‘Stars in their eyes’ talent show. It was awesome.
I was called last Saturday and asked if I’d be willing to be the token governor on the judging panel. Clearly they’d been through the other 15 or so before ending up with me. Anyway I said yes and found myself alongside a couple of IVC old pupils who’d earlier ‘starred’, a guy from the Junction and another from Ken Stevens which provides equipment, a lady who’s ‘in production’ and the landlord of the Castle in Cambridge who it appears is a rocker of some pedigree.
To call it a talent show is to undersell the event. It was highly professional and featured over 100 students across the ages performing 30 acts. Many students performed in more than one act. They went through auditions at the end of last year and since then had been exhaustively coached by a professional team. They must have been good because the show, which ran for 2 nights before the official judging, was very good and wonderfully exciting.
Not only were there over 100 students in the show but there were also hundreds in the audience so that over the 3 nights just about everyone in the school must have either performed or enjoyed the performance. It’s one of the things I like about IVC, I’d noticed it previously at its Christmas show, those who don’t take part are fantastic supporters.
The judging itself was a challenge but we came out pretty unanimous at the end. ”The Boy Does Nothing’ could have scooped any number of different awards but making it the outstanding act of the evening opened up awards for the many other smashing performances.
