Life’s too short to drink instant coffee

Photographs of the month

There are links below to galleries with the twelve photos of the month which I post about in the blog. The photos on the left are those I selected for my ‘one photo a year’ books. Usually they are one of the monthlies. But not always! Note that I only began to publish photos of the month in 2016 so the galleries before then have been developed retrospectively. Some of the photographs in these are not quite so good as later ones.

2025

Another year successfully completed. It started with me travelling to Australia via Mauritius and ended with a week in ‘historic’ Spain with short break in South Wales in the middle. I committed a little more time to my photography, I took on leadership of the new member community at the Camera Club and I won its POV competition in which this photo scored 20.

It was a very full year with super holidays in starting in Cyprus, then a rather wet Derbyshire and a somewhat drier Northumbria before finishing with a full dose of culture in Florence. I ended my trusteeship at Histon & Impington Green Spaces, I enjoyed the general election with three Lib Dem gains around Cambridge and I had an op on my right little finger to address Dupuytrens Contracture.

2023

The year started with a bucket list trip to Jordan and continued with a rather wet week in Piemonte (this photo is the Grand Gallery at the Palace of Venaria) and the Italian Riviera in May and a hot and dry week in Rhodes in September. Back home I continued as a trustee at Histon & Impington Green Spaces and joined the Cambridge Camera Club.

2022

It was the first full year of travel after Covid although there were still some restrictions in place early on. I enjoyed a week in Switzerland (this photo is across the lake at Aroza and is the first one that I’ve had published). Later in the year we visited Sorrento and North Wales and took a first three generation holiday in Norfolk. I ended the year with a photo trip to the Elan Valley.

2021

Another year beset by Covid but a little more freedom to travel and I enjoyed a couple of business trips to Spain in the second half. Before that we visited places we’ve not been to before including Peterborough (the photo was taken there at a Pride event), Lincoln, Weymouth and Winchester. I also joined a photo weekend in the New Forest.

2020

It ws the year of Covid of course so after we returned from our big trip to Indonesia in January there was little travel, just an occasional visit to Cambridge but with all the attendant rules of mask wearing and social distancing (the photo is not one of the 12 photos of the month but is one of the bears people put in their windows during Lockdown).

2019

It started as a pretty normal year and then ran into my cardio event in August. Later we headed off to Indonesia (the photo is of Princess Sita in a Kecak dance in Uluwatu on Bali) for Xmas and the New Year. We enjoyed a week in Sicily in the Spring and a week in Wales in August. I also went to a wedding in Manchester.

2018

A memorable year with lots of travel: we enjoyed a springtime holiday in Sardinia and a super week in Oman at the end of the year. In between there was a weekend in Dyffryn Ceiriog. The highlight for me though was an Indian trip and the Taj Mahal (photo). It’s one of those sites you’ve got to see for yourself!

2017

A very busy year starting with my re-election as a County Councillor with over 50% of the vote and including a big 70th birthday trip to Hong Kong (the photo is a classic junk shot taken from Kowloon looking over towards Hong King Island) and Australia. There was also a week in Portugal, a weekend in Hawarden for a wedding and another in Glasgow to be immersed in Charles Rennie Macintosh.

2016

It was a good year with two trips to Italy! Puglia in the Spring and then Sicily later in the year. Plus a visit to a Xmas market in Bruges but it was a little warm. There was also a trip to South Wales to celebrate a school friend’s wedding anniversary, Charles and I enjoyed a couple of days in Norwich and Cromer and I spent a few days in Durham.

2015

Lots of travel in 2015 starting with our first trip to Australia (via Singapore) and ending with a wedding trip to Indonesia (photo is an early morning scene at Borobudur) with a few days in Rome in September. We also visited London for a trip on the London Eye to celebrate Juni’s 65th and marvelled at the e-luminate festival in Cambridge

2014

This was the year that Charles left for Australia so we enjoyed a couple of days in Oxford (photo is of the bridge over the lake at Blenheim Palace). We also had a week in Turkey on a special off season deal with RSD (really strict discipline) and I spent a couple of days in Plymouth. The Tour de France came to Cambridge and, sadly, John Rickards began his cancer treatment.

2013

It was an election year and I celebrated my re-election with a bucket trip visit to Machu Pichu. I also took short trips to Tromso to check out the Northern Lights and to Bath. Juni and I also enjoyed a short break in Cordoba and I finished my third and last interim management spell in Spain. This photo is of Juni and Richard Kemp on a Saturday morning as we walked to our weekly breakfast at Don Pasquale.

2012

I began a third period of interim management in Spain and that took me to the US, Russia, Brazil and China. It also gave me a day driving at the Barcelona Grand Prix ciruit. We also enjoyed acoast to coast holiday in Cosa Rica (the photo is one of our boats as we glided through the Tortuguero; the guide in the front is the guy who handled the emergency when Juni had her medical issue later on) and a week in Provence.

2011

The year of the wedding! That’s Clare and Alex not William and Kate. I enjoyed a short trip to Cardiff (the photo is the front of the Senedd) and we took holidays in Rome and the Languedoc.

2010

It was another year benefiting from business travel as I enjoyed a second spell of interim management in Spain (photo is Joan Merino who was often my taxi driver to and from the airport; he’s sadly since died). We spent a long weekend in Andalucia in the Spring and later in the year we were in Kerala. I also spend a few days in Edinburgh tracking the footsteps of John Rebus

We started the year with a trip to Cuba (photo is a skyline shot in Havana) which is one of those places you have to visit to fully appreciate, such dilapidated splendour! Later in the year we enjoyed a few days in and around Assissi. I was successfully re-elected to the County Council and I started another spell of interim management in Spain

I began the year with a week’s langlauf in St Moritz (the photo is the Lindenhof in Zurich) and then during the year we enjoyed a week in Morocco and a longer trip to Indonesia and Hong Kong. I also spent a few days in Kreiz Viersen and a couple in Bournmouth both courtesy of the County Council.

2007

It was a year of political significance: we had the big save our station event in Histon and I became leader of the County Lib Dem group. During the year we enjoyed a weekend in Exeter and a week in il Marche. It was also the year of my big 6 party. The photo is a wintery scene at Aldeburgh

2006

It was not a terribly busy year. A week in Sorrento, a few days in Colorado after visiting PackExpo later in the year and then a trip to Namibia (photo is of flamingos on that trip) before year end. That was the first time that I got to use my new DSLR.

Lots happened this year. It was the year I was elected as a County Councillor which quickly became a significant part of my life. The year started with a second safari trip to South Africa. The we had a trip to Seville etc in the Spring and then I lucked out with a trip to Australia courtesy of a French customer (the photo is of the Grand Hotel Amrth Kurhaus in Scheveningen courtesy of the same customer).

2004

This is an incomplete year because I only got my first digital camera in March which was towards the end of my first interim management stint in Spain. That took me to Ukraine (the photo on the left) and Russia and the Far East. I then enjoyed a week in Vancouver and towards the end of the year we revisited friends in Switzerland
