Photos of the month: August 2024

Oops got myself a little behind with my obsession with Dupuytrans posts. August’s photo is one of my regular Friday beer pics but I like the way the colours of the can connect with the the background of our kitchen ‘statement’ wall. This photograph was taken with my Sony A7 III 1/125th at f1.8 and…

Photo of the month: July 2024

Sometimes you just capture the moment and on a rainy day there were still people out punting. This shot was taken using my Samsung Galaxy s20 FE 1/170th at f1.8 ISO 250 and a ’35mm focal length equivalent’ of 26mm. I think the colours work a treat.

We went to Jonathan Chatfield’s ordination at Ely Cathedral where I had the opportunity to sit for a while and really appreciate the majesty of the building. This shot was taken looking upwards using my Samsung Galaxy s20 FE 1/50th at f1.8 ISO 250 and a ’35mm focal length equivalent’ of 26mm. I reckon it’s…

We ‘enjoyed’ rather a wet few days in Derbyshire with Charles and Clare and Alex and their family. On our last day we took refuge from the rain in Chesterfield where we visited the church with the crooked spire. One tends to think of it as something special but it’s ‘only’ a parish church. But…

Vacation trips are always a good source of photographs, something different and a little different from what what you normally get. This one’s from my recent trip to Cyprus and was taken in the Turkish part of Nicosia. I hadn’t realised that a major part of the economy of the Turkish part of Cyprus is…

I was in Cambridge with my DSLR for a specific purpose and that was not to engage in street photography. However when the opportunity arises you’ve got to take it and a phone is an easier device to use in such circumstances. In this instance I suspect it was as much street performance as street…

    Cuba remembered

Last night at the Cambridge Camera Club we saw the results of a recent trip to Cuba by Roy Essary (https://shuttershot.co.uk/). It prompted me to go back and look at the photos I’d taken when we visited in 2009. I was using a Sony DSLR A300 in those days and although most of the shots…

    5 from 50

That’s 5 photographs from 50 years ago. I’ve published two collections of my first two decades of digital photography starting in 2004. As chance would have it I bought my first SLR (single lens reflex) camera in 1974 so I’ve started to see if I can put together similar collections for the 30 years since…

Wisbech sadly is not the town it was. It used to be a thriving trading post with the elegant buildings that would go with it. And it was home to social pioneers like Octavia Hill (urban poverty) and Thomas Clarkson (slavery). In recent years it’s become dependant on agriculture with the its low wages and…

Photo of the Month: January 2024

This is one of those photos which I thought I must take after seeing a photographer with his tripod taking it one sunny day on Harrison Way in St Ives. A day or so later I was ready and parked conveniently. Sadly the sun was not shining and all I had was my mobile. However…
