    My first real camera was a Halina 35X (I had a Kodak Brownie earlier). I inherited it from my father and it was a great camera to start with as I learned the basics of exposure, shutter speed and ISO ratings (although I think we talked more about DIN in those days).

    I guess the topic on most people’s radar until yesterday was the heatwave. People compare it to 1976 but I didn’t really experience hat. It was the year I moved from Jakarta to Hong Kong and I just remember a short break mid-summer when I do recall some pretty good weather.

    A six o’clock start, sub-zero temperatures with a little added wind chill and an appointment with a maxillofacial surgeon who’s going to re-engineer my mouth. Not a great start to a Friday and the subsequent weekend.

    I guess I’m of an era. I read a newspaper. In fact I’ve got one on subscription and if I haven’t bought one all day I’ll still go along to the newsagent at 10pm and pick one up. I just like to read a newspaper.

    I’m not saying that recent years have not been good, they’ve all been good or even excellent, just that 2017 seems to have been exceptionally so. Anyway this is my 5th year end review and I’ll change the format.

    We’re off on holiday shortly and it’s going to be a big one. I’ve got myself a significant birthday so we’re off to Australia (again) via Hong Kong for the best part of 4 weeks with time in Melbourne and Adelaide before taking the train to Perth and a couple of weeks in WA.
