Photo of the month: January 2025

I’ve always been dismissive of black and white photos. I’ve felt that since colour exists why go back to a system which only existed because the colour option had not yet been developed. But recently I’ve seen that there is something extra about black and white and I’ve seen some super examples of it being done well and adding mood to an otherwise flat and sterile colour shot. So I’ve done a little experimentation and this month’s photo is one of my first results

This photo was taken with my Samsung Galaxy s20 FE, 1/50th at f2.4, ISO 32 and 35mm focal length equivalent of 76mm. I reduced saturation to minus 100 and increased the black of the subject. I’m pleased with the result.
