Life’s too short to drink instant coffee

Galleria, Cambridge: 23 Sep 08

Is this the best value for money lunch in Cambridge? I was there again today and in terms of value as distinct from simple cost it takes some beating.

I have 2 places of work and both have an in-house cafeteria; and both of them are rubbish. They run out of dishes half way through the lunch time rush, they are slow and they’re not even cheap. The galleria is a refreshing contrast. And what are the other alternatives? Pubs are formulaic and microwave driven and my the time you’ve ordered a drink they’re certainly not cheap. The chain restaurants nearby, the Galleria is adjacent to Magdelene Bridge, are, well, chain restaurants.

The Galleria by contrast offers a set menu for £7.50 for 2 courses (3 courses are a couple of quid more) with a choice for each course. Today I had chili tiger prawns for a starter and an excellent main course pasta dish. Interesting choices, apparently healthy food and portions that are just right for a lunch time. The service is excellent and intelligent and, if you need it, there’s a perfectly adequate wine list with choices by the glass.

I’ve been to the Galleria several times through the winter but was disappointed that the lunch time menus disappeard in the summer. The management admitted: we need the money nand toursits will pay. Fair enough. But now they’re back and I can recommend them.
